Crews Letter #2008 10   A Justice System Foundering

  Return to the Crews Page

If you grew up in the South in the 50’s, you must have heard this joke:

Two black kids are riding double on a bicycle in their neighborhood.  A sheriff’s deputy hits them from the rear doing over 50 miles an hour. This is a residential street, not a highway.

The kid on the handlebars is thrown to the pavement and killed.  The bicycle driver, Leroy, is thrown 50 yards and lands safely in a tree.

The Sheriff’s Department investigates the event.

The deputy is escorted home and consoled.

Leroy is arrested for leaving the scene of the accident and criminal negligence resulting in death.

It is against the law in Mississippi to ride double on a bicycle.

Good Morning Crew;

It was not funny then.  It is not funny now.

The state is California.  The bicycle is an O’Day 27, pictured to the right.  Race is not the issue.

And you thought the Old South was backward.  Good ‘ole boys take care of their own.
