Crews Letter #2004 10 Pula, Croatia

Good
Morning Ladies and Gentlemen:
The venue: a Coliseum of the Roman Empire, the performing
company: Theatre “Komedija” Zagreb, the show:
Jesus Christ, Superstar. Andrew Lloyd Weber came to Pula. The performance was great.
As the albatross flies, this town is 70 miles from Venice. The Romans thought enough of it to build a
coliseum, theatre, temple, forum and many other edifices in the second century
BC. Its population never grew to match
the expectations. 22,000
seats in the coliseum, population of the town toped out at 5,000.
A near perfect natural harbor, the Venetians used it as
first base out of Venice.
James Joyce worked here for a short time early in his
pre-literary career. He was not so
impressed. He described the town as “a back-of –God place – a naval Siberia”. We did not understand his novels either.
As a holiday destination, the Italians still have Pula
high on their list. For this reason, the
show bill for the season is quite impressive.
They build ships in Pula,
real ships. The crane on the barge is
one way to move big things from one part of the yard to another.
The weather has taken an unusual turn for the better, cool
and dry. Lows have been in the upper
60’s and highs in the low 80’s. The
winds are good but moderate, mostly 3 and 4, a 5 or 6
every now and then. We are finding Croatia
to be a first class location for laid back cruising. The distance and time between harbors is
short. The anchorages are good and
sometimes we just don’t leave the next day.
Ease the sheet, please,
Phyl & Fred
