Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen:

The 2002 Season has started with a great cruise through the Ionian Sea, then east through the Gulf of Corinth, the Corinth Canal, across the northern tip of the Saronic Sea. We are now in Athens for some minor repairs, provisioning and rest.

Gaulberto joined us in Corfu as planned. Being young, new to sailing and a very skilled sailor, he pushed us. We sailed all but his first and last day. The first was spent learning the boat, finishing the preparation and checking out with the Port Authorities. The last he toured Athens and we rested. In the other 7 days we sailed. We sailed from Corfu to Athens calling on Lakka on Paxos, Nidri on Levkas, Frikes on Ithaki, Trizonia, Korinthos on Peloponnesus, and Aigina Town on Aigina.

During this cruise we used almost all configurations of sail possible on Perception. The cruising chute was out several times and she works as well as she looks. On the trip from Aigina we had 6 and 7 winds, 22 to 33 knots, 25 to 38 per hour, for Americans. For this we double reefed the Main and rolled up 3/4ths of the Jib. It was a great time to test the new Storm Jib, but the captain had not planned well.

Gaulberto has promised to prepare a trip log. We will forward it as soon as it is available.

Here in Athens, we have met with our friends Chrysanthi and Stavros. They are a joy. Their hospitality is near unbelievable.

Also while we are in Athens there has been time for some essentials: laundry, email, repair the forward head, provisioning and rest.

Also while in Athens, Perception was captured by the Port Police. There is a sailing tax for private boats that are not registered in the European Community. She is a USA documented vessel. Rumor is the tax is levied when you leave the country. Not so according to the Athens Port Police. It is due at the end of each three months and when the boat leaves the country. So one day the man said pay up before you leave this port. And by the way, the tax office is closed for the weekend. Monday is your first opportunity. Sara and Gail will have to find us in Athens at Kalimaki Marina, not Olympic Marina near Spata. No Problem!

Correction: The new Athens Airport is not at Sparta. Sparta is on Peloponnesus. The airport is at Spata. What a difference an r makes.

Famous Last Words - We are now well placed to meet Sarah and Gayle on April 30th. Our contact point will be Olympic Marina. This was written before Perception went to Port Police Jail.

Their cruise will be south through the Saronic Sea to Crete.

On Crete, we expect to sail with Francis and Suzy from the west end to Agios Nikolaos.

Our marina of choice on Crete will be Agios Nikolaos Marina. They have a good web page for those who would like more details. This will be our contact point for Dave and Carol in late May. Their cruise is east to Rhodes.

After that, the next stop is Turkey. We are still in need of crew for June, the first half of July and August through October.

Keep a Tight Luff,

Phyl & Fred
