Subject: 24 August, Dubrovnic, Croatia

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen:

We have reached the southeastern end of Croatia.  We are now in Dubrovnic.  Mark, Jasna and Matthias joined us last weekend and will help take Perception on to Kerkira (Corfu) Greece.  The Concerto flag has been at the first spreader all week.  Thank you, Ulrike and the Concerto team.

It is a bit of a shame to leave Croatia.  The islands and water here are fantastic.  The people are wonderful.  We have sailed and eaten well.  One could spend a whole summer here and not be bored.

Saturday, 11 August, we had an unexpected Bora.  Bora is the local name for a strong north - northeast wind that results from a high over the alps and a low east of the Adriatic.  The morning forecast at the marina in Zader did not predict it.  By noon, we were sailing in 6 and 7s.  We anchored for lunch off a beach.  By 1500 things seemed to have calmed down so we steamed on in the lee of whatever land was available.  By 1700 it was getting worse, not better, so we found a designated anchorage and put in for the night.  Just behind a low island we had a good holding bottom with 5 meters of water and protection from the waves, not the wind.  The fetch was less than less than 200 meters.  We set up a GPS and a manned anchor watch.  The GPS was probably sufficient.  Winds during the night gusted to  50 knots.  Sunday afternoon, the winds dropped to 4s.  We had a wonderful sail to Rogoznica, the destination of the day before.

At Rogoznica we had a factory recall.  The fuel tank on other boats of the same make and model have had the tank crack with the diesel being transferred from the closed tank to the open boat.  Obviously the odor and the fire hazard are a problem.  So Elan asked us to go north to Betina at the north end of Murter.  It was less than a mile from where we had sat out the Bora.  The repairs required two days of waiting and one to complete.

The issues list is getting shorter.  The autohelm has now been installed and works better than hoped for.

The factory recall meant that we had only one day to get to Split to meet Mark.  In spite of a heavy fog we met the time schedule as planned.  Then it was on to Bol to meet Jasna and Matthias.  We were on time.  They were in Split waiting in the ferry queue.  Jasna's family prepared feast of lamb and local salads.  It was a great dinner.
